Following on the heels of it’s older brother the Pixma iP1700 comes the Canon Pixma iP800 multi function laser printer for text, graphics, and photos. It’s just a simple printer that doesn’t ask for much and just delivers the ability to print.

It’s functions are simple and the results are good. It comes with a software bundle that is user friendly and you can do some good things with the software regarding photos and graphics.

Cons of the Canon Pixma iP1800 is no output tray to capture prints. It also gobbles up lots of ink so be ready to buy more cartridges. This isn’t for heavy duty usage but for the small and occasional printing use. So don’t get it if you intend on doing major desktop publishing.

The HP Deskjet D1660 is what’s referred to as a budget multi function laser printer that does what a printer is supposed to do without the additional bells and whistles for text and photo. It’s a compact unit that focuses on function and budget instead of razzle dazzle. It’s the kind of printer that you can get that is easy to use, small for the office.

It’s got the pros of easy use, having only one button for operation instead of the large menu options of other printers so don’t worry about a learning curve. The cartridge is all three colors in one cartridge and replacement occurs when only one color is depleted.

The specifications of this unit are width 17 in, depth 7.8 in, height 6.2 in, and weight of 4.9 lbs. The printer itself is the HP thermal Inkjet with 4 ink cyan, magenta, yellow, and black wit 1 black cartidge and 1 color cartridge. The connectivity is Wired, USB interface. Resolution at maximum is 1200 dpi and 4800 x 1200 dpi. It has a duty cycle of 750 pages monthly. The black cartridge is good for 200 pages and the color cartridge holds up for 150 pages. Operating system required are Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 2000, and Apple MacOS X 10.5 or later.

If you want a printer with no frills attached, something that just prints, doesn’t call your office, talk to your tv set or walk the dog, then this HP Deskjet D1660 is for you. Again, it’s just basic, attractive and the pros are all it does is print. You push one button and it prints. Connects via USB and that’s that. It's print capacity and ink cartridge system are drawbacks as mentioned before. Also it has no output tray and the warranty is only for 90 days whilst other printers offer longer warranties with more service. This is just what it says it is, a small, affordable multifunctional laser printer for text, graphics, and photos.

It's max document enlargement is 400% with a max document reduction of 25%. It has an abundance of copying features expected from a Canon model such as 4 on 1, 2 on 1, fit to page, trimming copy, preset copy ratios, gutter shadow correction manual color adjustment, masking copy, face brightener and fading correction, image repeat, auto exposure and intensity.

Add to all that the scanning specs of optical resolution 2400 x 4800 dpi and interpolated resolution of 19200 x 19200 dpi with color depth of 24 bit and color depth internal of 48 bit.

The classic Epson Stylus R220 Printer comes with the then Advanced Micro Piezo technology for optimization for photo printing, 90 nozzles x 6 CcMmYK with 6 colors and an ink cartridge individual dye based superior Photo Inks.

It's dimensions are 18.5 inches in length, 10.5 wide, and 7.8 in height. It only weighs 11.4 lbs without cartridges so it makes it very portable for a printer.

The ink cartridge can handle 630 pages of text, 450 pages of graphics. The printer can spit out 15 ppm and up to 15 ppm color. A 4 inch x 6 inch photo takes 57 seconds. The printer handles a maximum paper width of 8.5 inches with a max printable area of 4 inches x 6 inches, 5 inches x 7 inches, 8 inches x 10 inches. It has a paper capacity size of 4 inches x 6 inches, 5 inches x 7 inches, 8 inches x 10 inches, letter size, legal size, A4, B5, A5, A6, half letter, executive, and user definable 3.5 inches to 44 inches in length. Borderless photo sizes of 4 inches x 6 inches, 5 inches x 7 inches, 8 inches x 10 inches, and letter sized.

The paper tray can handle 120 sheets plain paper and 20 sheets of photo paper, 10 envelopes, one transparency.

This model came out in 2005 and was designed for easy printing with as many functions possible for it's size and weight. Some people found it easy to set up and ready to use and others found it a bit of a hassle. It's basically a matter of choice and function and it's best to look at the specs and see what it offers in comparison with other models of it's day. It may well have a feature or two that makes it a collectible for your light printing needs. It came out at a time when printers were trying to catch up to the computers and it's just at that borderline of compatibility with systems made today.
